I recently hosted a group of graduate students from Mexico as part of an “Urban Challenge” sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless.
These students and one lawyer hope to go back to their country to make a difference combating the drug cartels and standing for civil rights in their communities.
During the challenge, they panhandled and applied for jobs in Dupont Circle. They also spoke to people experiencing homelessness in the area.
It was an eye-opening experience for them. Their take was that Americans take a lot of what we have for granted.
