There’s FIRE in Her Spirit
Poet and community leader Abena Disroe was displaced by a fire that gutted her apartment at a public housing community three years ago. Despite her housing insecurity, Disroe kept writing and recently published a book collecting the work she had started then. In this essay, she shares how writing, coupled with community support, helped her through the chaos that followed this traumatic incident and reflects on her lessons learned along the way.
