Shammar Allen and the Underdogs

Newber Machado

In April of 2013 at the Kennedy Center, I was able to see and hear Mr. Shammar Allen play trumpet. Since he lived in New Orleans, I asked him questions about Hurricane Katrina and what happened. He was very candid in saying that he was in Atlanta when the storm hit, and that it didn’t affect him personally.

However, Harry Connick, Jr. called Mr. Allen and told him to take care of the city that was so good to him. So Mr. Allen decided to tutor two kids for free once each month. A nice lady came up to me after the Kennedy Center performance to say she liked my question.

Mr. Allen also told me about Fats Domino. I really appreciated being able to talk about music with him.
